Why momentum is the secret to business success

Jun 9, 2021

At the Jeunesse Convention held in March 2021, Rachel McVinish – our General Manager for Australia, New Zealand and Fiji – shared an inspiring metaphor that fuels her own business success.

Being successful as a business owner, she said, is like being on a swing set. When we start out, we’re often filled with enthusiasm, putting in plenty of effort to rise higher and higher. The problem, however, is that as soon as we stop pumping our legs back and forth, we’re already slowing down. So too in business.

“The minute you stop talking to people, the minute you slow down, your business will slow down,” Rachel said. Instead, to maintain success – or even grow further – it’s essential to keep putting in the same amount of effort as at the beginning. That’s the only way to keep your business swinging ever-higher.

Sometimes, your business ‘legs’ may start to tire. So how do you keep pushing every day to maintain success? The secret is momentum – here’s how to find it and how to maintain it for the long term.

Know your reason why

It all starts here. When you have a powerful reason to make your business a success, that becomes the fuel that will propel you towards action every day. Do you want a successful home business so you can spend more time with your family? Are you craving the flexibility that comes with setting your own hours? Or perhaps you aspire to some extra income to help manage your bills each month?

Know exactly WHY you’re building a business – and remind yourself of it throughout each day.

Work as part of a team

If you find it difficult to maintain enthusiasm on your own, look to the power of your network to build each other up. In this business, no one is singularly responsible for success – it’s possible to reach far greater heights when you harness community and teamwork.

Research has shown that groups make better decisions than individuals, so brainstorm ideas together. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice from those people in your network who are more experienced than you are. Even the simple act of arranging a weekly coffee catch-up with someone in your team can leave you both feeling more energised than if you try to go it alone.

Venture outside your comfort zone

Remember when you first started in business and each new lead came with a mix of excitement and trepidation? Making that phone call, booking that party or sending that follow up email felt like a step outside your comfort zone. If you haven’t felt that in a while, it’s time to bring it back with even bigger goals and challenges. The truth is that staying successful in business means conquering your fears on a daily basis.

Follow the template

One of the benefits of a network marketing business like Jeunesse is that we already have a template for success. Unlike other business models where new ideas must be constantly tried and tested, we have a documented pathway that can help you reach your goals. For example, by focusing the majority of your efforts on recruiting just two new executives each and every month, your success will naturally follow.

Pace yourself

Hopefully by now you’re brimming with enthusiasm and committed to maintaining the momentum in your business. Here’s a final tip for what not to do: don’t try to work on your business every hour of the day or even every day of the week. Our minds and bodies need regular periods of rest in order to stay focused.

American academic and consultant Alex Soojung-Kim Pang has studied the benefits* of rest. He’s found that by making it a regular part of our daily routine, we’re more productive, innovative and better able to find solutions in life and business.

So as you keep pushing to maintain the momentum and reach greater business heights, don’t forget to hit pause occasionally to enjoy the view from up high.
